Kitchen Table Talk
Ephesians 5 offers one of the most practical and often misunderstood pictures of Christian marriage in all of Scripture. Before addressing husbands and wives specifically, Paul lays a foundation that applies to every believer: be filled with the Holy Spirit and submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. Wives are called to submit to their husbands not as an act of inferiority, but as a reflection of the church's willing submission to Christ. Husbands are called to love their wives with three distinct expressions of love: sacrificial, sanctifying, and self-giving. Marriage is also meant to be a priority above careers, hobbies, children, and extended family, reflecting the leaving and cleaving principle from Genesis. Ultimately, a Spirit-filled Christian marriage is not just a personal blessing. It is a living testimony of the gospel to a watching world.
